MEDIA SPIN – SURPRESSED INFORMATION?

"We've all heard it before; A news anchor says or a magazine writer states, "According to experts…." And it is so common, we don't even think about it. We assume that whoever this "expert" may be—a professor, doctor or watchdog group spokesperson—must be on the level. But how do we really know? How often is it revealed who those experts are, where they get their funding, or with what organization(s) they're associated?" Those were words by Mike Fillon, who has written more than 150 consumer-oriented news and feature stories for WebMD, CBS HealthWatch, MSNBC, and the Reader's Digest Web sites. He has also written both short and feature length pieces for more than two dozen other publications, including Health Week, NCN Newsâ€"a Novartis Pharmaceutical newsletterâ€"Information Week and Science Digest.

"At the time Mr. Bechler (the baseball player) collapsed from heat stroke, much of the ephedrine he has swallowed was still in his stomach and had not yet entered his bloodstream. [The unabsorbed ephedrine] could not have caused or contributed to Mr. Bechler's death" -Forensic pathologist Dr. Michael Baden, former New York City chief medical examiner, in a letter to the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations Hearing on Issues Relating to Ephedra-Containing Dietary Supplements, July 23, 2003.

Case Point: EPHEDRA: I am not sure if you are aware of the propaganda behind the Ephedra issue, but hear this, DON'T BELIEVE WHAT YOU HEAR ON TV!! I have research from University's and independent studies, and the conclusion is Ephedra works! Don't you find it funny that the media reported nothing over the RAND Study? The RAND report (commissioned by President Bush) to research the Ephedra adverse events, found "there may have been five "sentinel" cases of death related to ephedra use over an approximate ten-year period." I'm sure you must have seen or read this somewhere….right? In fact, the RAND report actually stated that ephedra works. They clamor for action against ephedra yet ignore the risks of severe side effects and even death from much more common products —such things as aspirin, acetaminophen, alcohol, tobacco, and others.

"RAND has confirmed that not a single serious adverse event has occurred in more than 55 clinical studies that have been published and that provide scientific support for the safety and benefits of Ephedra dietary supplements."

Come on 20/20 GIVE ME A BREAK TOO...where was the report on that?!? I myself have taken Ephedra for 3 straight years and 4 more years off and on. In my opinion, the Federal Government is trying to regulate responsibility, when facts are PEOPLE have to ACT responsible when taking anything! When you take aspirin, do you follow directions and take 1 tablet every 4 hours? Or do you say, if 1 tablet is good than 2 have to be better? If you take 2 or 3 aspirins and get sick, who is the blame...the aspirin? In fact, more than 16,000 deaths a year occur from taking aspirin!!!

In my opinion, the FDA is trying to ban Ephedra so the only choice we will have will be going to a medical doctor (office fee) to get a prescription (another fee) to help with weight loss. I personally have 2 objections to this school of thought:

1. FDA is run by MD's, CEO's,CFO's, Presidents and Board Members of some Pharmaceutical companies. (And who benefits if they ban Ephedra)?
Example: Mark B. McClellan, M.D., Ph.D. Commissioner of Food and Drugs (http://www.fda.gov/oc/mcclellan/bio.html)

2. Doctors Are The Third Leading Cause of Death in the US, Causing 250,000 Deaths Every Year! That was 4 years ago, published in Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). http://www.mercola.com/2000/jul/30/doctors_death.htm

Don't let the media be your only source of information when it comes to your health. Do yourself a favor...get the facts on Ephedra and any other supplement that comes under fire....Read the studies for yourself......If you would like a copy of any of the Ephedra study's or the RAND report, just email me your request.

I have been sickened with the amount of misleading and dis-information in all forms of the media when it comes to anything "Natural" being used for Complimentary Alternative Medicine (CAM). It is time to stand up and be heard! Yes I know I am opening up a pandora's box, but the health and well-being of millions of people are hanging in the balance. I AM TIRED OF THE LIES!

We as individuals are intelligent enough to make an informed decision on our health, if given ALL the information. Everyone knows that nothing attracts viewers or sells newspapers better than a good old-fashion health scare! THIS HAS TO STOP!! Now I know there is no way of totally stopping this, but there is a way to tell (in Paul Harvey's words) "The Rest of the Story". Until I get this TV Show up and running I plan to use this internet highway as a means to distribute THE WHOLE TRUTH when it comes to Complimentary Alternative Medicine (CAM).

People, it is time that someone stands up and speaks up for the "news" that is not being told. A local news channel here in Richmond, Va. ran a story (7-6-04) about soy and estrogen. The whole tone in the news story (my opinion) was nannie-nannie boo-boo here is another slap in the face for you natural freaks. First of all, soy contains compounds called isoflavones that mimic the effects of estrogen; it has no estrogen in it.

Here is what they did not tell you in this news piece:

"The authors noted that most of the women were long past menopause and said it is possible the study was timed too late to enable them to experience any soy-related benefits. Previous research has suggested that soy might help prevent bone loss immediately after menopause. "But it is much harder to reverse the bone loss when the damage is already done," Kreijkamp-Kaspers said, adding that the same might be true for mental function. It is also possible that other soy products would have different results. The study, funded by Dutch research organizations, used only Solae powder, provided by its maker, the Solae Co."

Soy is mostly protein (almost 40%) and the body has to produce more acid to digest protein. Now to keep the blood pH in check, the body has to buffer that acid. And what does the body pull from storage to buffer acid…….? Calcium! So soy would not be the supplement of choice when trying to ward off bone loss. For that you would want the herb highest in Calcium.....Valerian….not soy! But the whole piece was to shed a bad light on soy for something that we don't even use soy for!

Story's like this go on day after day, week after week, and year after year. Mis-leading and false information on Natural Supplements have (it seems) bombarded the air waves. Well it is no wonder people are confused when it comes to choosing supplements for rebuilding health.

Comcast Cable has a slot open on RICH-TV, which I would like to use for the purpose of "Telling the Whole Story" backed by documented research. I want to educate everyone on the parts of the story that the media is leaving out. Letters requesting sponsorship for this show went out to major grocery stores, health food stores, resturants and anyone else that has a vested interest in the Natural Health Industry. And because this (in my opinion based from reading and listening to the rejection statements) is not a profit based show and only for educational purposes, no one wants to sponsor it. I also got a few "no money in the budget" excuses. Regular commercials on prime time TV during popular show can run as much as $250,000 per 30 seconds. But no one had a little over a thousand dollars for a 30-minute show!

The cost of this show for the 13-week contract required, is $15,000. I have decided to ask for a donations of any size, even as small as $1.00. Of course receipts will be given for your tax records for any and all donations received. And no, I don't know 15,000 people, so this is where I need your help. Please make donations by check or money order to: Nature's Answer – "Media" Mail to: Nature's Answer "Media" 605 Research Rd. STE. E Richmond, Va. 23236. If making a donation by VISA, MC or DISC please call me.
